OK so the other day I was thinking about writing a song, and suddenly I was thinking about all the great songwriters who have lyric after lyric line after line, passing through the minds of simple people singing shouting, tweeting, texting there lyrics enthusiastically. So what is it that actually makes a good song GREAT? I'm going to use who I would call the greatest songwriter ever as the backdrop for my tips, and before you ask I do not profess to be a novice at this.
OK so he pretty much wrote 100's of songs so what were the secrets to his success and how can we mere students apply these.
He wrote truthful lyrics
whether its a failed relationship that was all your fault that it broke, David wrote with truth. Psalms opens with this "Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; Have mercy upon me and hear my prayer.
Here we see he was totally and utterly desperate and wasn't afraid to let the world know it, somehow we connect and relate to truth good/bad, we somehow feel as though the songwriter feels our pain and that were not alone, it makes us vulnerable yes, but the audience falls in love with that vulnerability just like two lovers in a movie scene, were suckers yes!
He wrote selflessly
His ultimate goal was reconciliation and inner piece, he wrote about when he was wrong more than when he was right. He wanted Gods peace and forgiveness.
He wrote for his audience, God, us, the people.
His lyrics display the utmost respect for a Holy God, and his constant need for redemption, when the owness is taken off the writer and placed on someone/something else we see the person has other relationships good/bad and we identify with them. We want to hear about when you failed, when things didn't go the way you wanted, when you couldn't sleep because of a broken heart. We want the nitty gritty with no detail spared. We want a picture in our minds that lasts forever.
He wrote through his own pain
Alot of the time this is the hardest time to write when your life's all wrong and messed up. You feel empty inside but there's something about those lyrics that hit the core of mankind's being and helps them to look to a Holy God in times of trouble. Ps 31 17 "Let the lying lips be put to silence which speak insolent things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous". David feared for his life several times and yet communicated the deep sorrow, pain in his heart and turned it into sweet music, the medicine to the soul.
